Pre-trip hikes near Lake Como.
We got to Italy two days before the start of the trip and had time to explore the mountains surrounding Lake Como.

On the first day, we drove to Lake Como, bought some food for the main trip, left the car in the car park and went for a hike.

The mountains here are very similar to the Dolomites, which are not far away.

The rocks here are very oddly shaped.
We rented a house in a little town in the valley below these slopes.

In the evening, Lena, Alexei and Olga arrived at Moggio. The next morning we took a chairlift directly from our village to Piani di Artavaggio, where a small ski resort is open in winter and cows graze in summer. A strange multi-storey building caught our eye. On closer inspection it turned out to be a hotel.
We walked along the pastures and started traversing the ridge. The meadows here are flooded with yellow colour.
These flowers are Jacobaea alpina (L.) Moench.
There was a small path traversing the ridge. Most people don't venture that far from the top of the chairlift.
Are we on the right path?
We crossed to the other side of the ridge and climbed to the top of Zucco Barbesino. This valley was very crowded! The clouds surrounded the ridge, but it never rained. In this photo you can see the figure of a Madonna in a small recess in the rock. Here we were pretty much alone.
Climbing up onto the ridge was easy, although the path on the map was not obvious. And then there was a nice path along the ridge.

We got down to the blue lake and then down into our valley. It took us a couple of hours to get home. In the evening we had time to go for a swim at Lake Como. There are no sandy beaches at Lesso. Late in the evening we were joined by three other members of our team. The next morning we picked up Sonya and went to the mountains to meet Lova.
