Nethermost Pike 25 November 2023
We are always trying to make the most of the good weather. This weekend we went to the Lakes again. There was a full moon. It was so bright that we didn't even switch on our torches. From the car park we hiked about three hundred metres uphill and pitched our tent on a small flat area.
The blue and red lines show our track on the 24 and 25 November. Shift-click on the track link will open it in nakarte.me.
During the night the temperature dropped below freezing. We got a bit cold, and even cooked breakfast in the tent.
The daylight hours are short at this time of year, and we planned a long hike. We got going and warmed up pretty quickly. It was very beautiful all around. Grasmere Lake was visible to one side.
And on the other side we could see Thirlmere.
A frozen puddle.
We spotted another tent on a nearby hillside, but there was no one else around.
The view to the south is Windermere with the sea behind it.
The Grisedale Tarn is shaped like the profile of a man.
Ice on the moss by a small stream.
And then we came to some icy rocks and started taking pictures. Water was running down the rocks under the ice crust.
The blades of grass were encased in an icy shell.
In some places the ice was completely transparent but in other places it was opaque.
Everything around us sparkled and twinkled in the sunshine.
Ice patterns.
St Sunday Crag.
We stopped for lunch at Hard Tarn.
The Helvellyn cliff is tinged with frost. The sun could not melt it.
Two small rainbow patches can be seen around the sun.
A full moon rose over the mountains. It was getting dark.
The view from Helvellyn towards Thirlmere.
We walked down from the plateau along one of the streams and then followed a path through the forest. We had to turn on our torches as it was getting dark.
