Lakes in the Autumn (Ennerdale), 26 October 2024

Once more we went to check out our mushroom spot where we usually pick chanterelles. For a change we left the car at Seathwaite and hiked up to a small flat area below Aaron Crags where we could pitch our tent.

It drizzled in the evening, but we didn't get wet. In the morning there were low clouds on the mountains. Suddenly the sun broke out.

We climbed up Great Gable, and are now descending towards Ennerdale.

We traversed Kirk Fell without descending into the valley.

There are usually no bright colours in the Lakes, the plants are very discreet. Alpine lady's-mantle (Alchemilla alpina L.).

Below is the Ennerdale valley, river Liza and remaining patches of forest. The road on the other side leads to a hostel, we passed it on the way back.

We did not find any chanterelles, but picked autumn chanterelles (Cantharellus tubaeformis). They are very popular in Sweden. They are difficult to spot unless you know what to look for. They grow in large groups. In Sweden, the stems of these mushrooms were bright yellow, but here they are just light yellow.
