Helvellyn 10 February 2024

Our American friends were visiting us this weekend and we really wanted to show them the Lake District. Unfortunately, most snow had thawed. We only went for one day, but in good weather. There was heavy fog on the way, but it almost cleared by the time we got to the mountains.

The fog all but disappeared. Sometimes we walked into a cloud, and then the wind blew it away. The fresh snow had fallen only a few days ago, but yesterday's rain had already washed it away.

From the pass we descended into the Glenridding Beck valley. The black heather lower down looks like peat erosion in the Peak District.

We hiked up Swirral Edge. The rocks were slippery but not icy. There were many people climbing up and down here.
