Hiking and kayaking in the Lakes, 27 - 28 July 2024

This weekend, we spent half a day hiking in the mountains and then did some kayaking.

The black, red and blue lines show our hiking track in the first and second days, and the kayaking track. Shift-click on the track link will open it in nakarte.me.

We camped right at the top of the hill, not far from the path. We arrived at night and left early in the morning, so no one saw us. We noticed another tent on another slope. They also camped far away from streams and tarns. Camping without water is not a problem, we just carry a couple of litres for breakfast. The morning was warm and sunny.

The opposite slope is covered with bright green ferns.

The fern here is taller than a person.

We climbed Sharp Edge to Blencathra. It's a sharp ridge with some easy scrambling. It is often busy, and you can even get stuck in a queue. Now we are descending along Hall's Fell.

Blencathra has several narrow ridges. This is Doddick Fell.

We got down to the car and drove to the north-west end of Thirlmere. Victor is inflating the kayak.

Thirlmere is a long lake. We paddled more than half of its length and then turned back.

If two people row together, the kayak can achieve a decent speed.
