Day 2. Monte Pasquale.

The path ends in the valley and the ascent to the Colle del Pasquale pass is not marked. It is better to climb west of the pass on scree and snowdrifts and then traverse to the pass. The traverse itself is not very pleasant and on the pass you have to get around a rocky outcrop - a short section may need to be protected if you go with heavy rucksacks. We decided to abandon the planned route (to Monte Cevedale) and climb Monte Pasquale instead. After reaching the ridge, the ascent is easy.

The red line shows our track. Shift-click on the track link will open it in nakarte.me.

We got up early every day. There were no frosts at night, but it was quite chilly so we put on warm jackets and only took them off when we got out into the sun. Igor was an exception.

We started climbing up snow fields.

In the morning the snow was still hard, so it was easy to walk in crampons. Our camp was below the glacial lake.

The slope was getting steeper...

... and steeper.

Climbing up with minimal acclimatisation was hard work.

Climbing straight to the pass is steep and there is a danger of falling rocks, it is better to go to the left and climb almost to the same altitude as the pass.

The snowfield is over, we have one last rocky section to climb.

Instead of descending to the pass and climbing up Monte Cevedale, we decided to climb Monte Pasquale. The ascent is quite easy on a pleasant wet glacier.

Barbed wire from the First World War.

Looking at the ridge of Monte Cevedale.

The last steep section before the summit.

A small blue glacial lake at the bottom of the glacier.

Lova is exploring the remains of military fortifications.

They must have had heavy weapons here.

Monte Cevedale and Cima Cevedale from Monte Pasquale. We got to the top of Cima Cevedale on the penultimate day.

Palon de la Mare.

Waiting for lunch.

At the summit. We pondered whether we should camp on the snow below the summit, but we were worried about the thunderstorms that were forecast in the evening. We decided to descend back to the same valley we had just come from.

Flying Cima Cevedale - Monte Cevedale - Monte Pasquale.

Königspitze. Grey rocks interspersed with red rocks.

The path went straight down the ridge.

We descended down into the valley.

Our yesterday's river and our moraine. We descended further down and camped there. Tomorrow morning we would go to the car park and drive to the next part of the route.

Crossing the stream.

The forecast was correct: thunder rumbled, lightning flashed, rain poured down, but the dinner still had to be cooked. We dug trenches around our tents, so nobody got flooded.
