Croatia 23-26 October 2021

Day one. The Krupa gorge.

We only spent three days of the Autumn half-term in Croatia, but it was a busy and memorable trip. The first two days were sunny, and we went walking in the mountains. The third day was supposed to be wet, but the forecast got it wrong and it didn't rain, so we spent the day walking around Zadar and Nin in good weather. We lived very close to the beach and went swimming in the sea a few times, although the water was not that warm. We were the only people on the beach who went swimming.

We drove to a small village of Ravni Golubic where the path into Krupa canyon starts. We didn't meet a soul in the first three hours of the trip. The path goes through a limestone plateau overgrown with juniper bushes and some trees.

The path then went down into the canyon. One can see first small waterfalls in the distance.

After visiting the waterfall, we went up the Krupa valley.

We could not take our eyes off the river. It is quite deep here but the water was so clear.

There were some fig trees in the valley. The riverbed is seen so clearly as though there is no water.

The river flooded the valley in places, and we had to bypass them on the rocks.

Another waterfall.

There were many bright red and yellow ash trees. Even though they were planted by people, they blended into the landscape very well.

The famous Kudin most. It was built long time ago so that the residents of the two villages on the opposite sides of the river can visit each other. It has 12 arches, the overall length is over 100 m. A busy path connects it with the nearby road. There were so many people here that we did not want to linger.

We are going further up the valley.

This is why nobody else went up the valley. There was a sign on the path warning about technical challenges but we did not understand Croatian language. One has to crawl over the metal brackets to get to the other side of this rock.

We conquered this via ferrata without any problems.

The river higher up becomes wider, but the valley is still beautiful. We met no people after Kudin most.

The water is very clear, and the stems of water lilies can be traced down to the riverbed.

We went a bit faster to save some time for visiting a monastery at the top of the valley.

We are close to the monastery.

Victor ran back to get our car while Maria and Sony visited the monastery.
