New York and surroundings, 23 December 2022 - 1 January 2023
Giant Mountain
We visited our friends in the US. We landed in Boston, and the next day our friends took us hiking and skiing near Lake Placid. The New York state was in the path of a bomb cyclone, it was cold (down to -15 °C) and there was a fair amount of snow. It took us a while to realise how lucky we were: it could have been a lot warmer and snowless. We spent our first day climbing Giant Mountain.

The trail goes up a steep slope.
We are crossing a stream. The rocks are covered with a shell of ice and snow.
A lake on the other side of the road. The rocks above it are all covered by ice. This is a popular spot for ice climbing.

We are getting close to the tree line. The snow became firm and slippery and we put on microspikes.

The wind at the top was noticeably stronger than lower down.

We almost ran back down, and managed to get to the car just before the twilight.
