The big Summer trip this year was planned as an easy hike with small children (7 years old and above) with a few harder day (or half-day) trips, with the Mount Elbrus climb at the end (normal route from the top of the piste basher track). The weather was not perfect hence the planned day trips had to be shortened significantly, and we saw nothing but fog at the Elbrus summit. Nonetheless we really enjoyed the trip: the highlights include hike on the Dzhikaugenkez glacier, Tyrolean traverse to cross river Mkyara, the night ride on piste basher up the slopes of Elbrus and the climb to the summit.
Coloured lines show our track.
Walking time includes short breaks and lunch break. The numbers following "+" sign are half-day trips.
General comments
- The Caucasus. We have not visited the Caucasus for several decades, and it was great to be back. The Caucasus mountains are so different from the Alps! Different landscape, different colours, different weather pattern, different rivers.
- The weather. We were not so lucky this year, we had quite a few rainy days. We were so looking forward to the day trip on the Dzhikaugenkez glacier but it rained all day and we had to cut it very short.
- Maps, paths, route descriptions. There are many trip reports on the Russian internet, they are easy to find.
- People. Surprisingly we met very people in the mountains. The first people we met were on the Syltran pass and on the path descending to Verkhniy Baksan.
