Haweswater, 9 March 2025

This weekend the weather was great and we went to the Lakes. We were joined by Igor, Misha and Leonya. We picked them up at Penrith station. There were only a few empty spaces left in the parking lot at the end of Haweswater. And by the little lake where we were going to stay, we counted four tents. We'd never camped in such a busy place before.

Vitya is washing up the dishes. Our neighbours had a quick breakfast, packed up and left, so we were left alone. Two of the tents were by large boulders and the others were under a small rock. We pitched ours on a knoll near a lake. No one disturbed anyone.

When we got to the lake yesterday night, one part of it was covered with frogspawn. We lit a flashlight and saw lots of frogs scattering away. In the morning we did not find a single frog, only frogspawn.

Freshly laid frogspawn is more grainy, and then it spreads out and turns to jelly. We saw no tadpoles.

It was so warm that we soon stripped down to our t-shirts and even made use of sunscreen.

It's very rare for the Lakes to be so windless. The reflection in the water is like a mirror.

A well-deserved break.

We reached the top of High Street and followed the ridge to the south. A Roman road ran along this ridge connecting two forts.

Descending a steep slope to Kentmere Lake.

Small Water and further down Haweswater. Although it was still warm, it felt like early spring rather than summer. There was a haze in the air and it felt a bit chilly.

We had a wonderful hike. This kind of weather is rare in the Lakes.
