Day 5. The Usselettes lakes.
This was a very short day. We used unexpected free time to practice crevass rescue. We also realised that we forgot Sonya's harness at our first camp at Baraques du Fond and spent time testing the improvised harness made from a sling.

We crossed the river and went past some ruins surrounded by fireweed.
Plan de la Lière.
The path descended into a forest and then climbed up towards the Deffeyes refuge. We collected some pine cones and spent some time at lunch extracting the seeds. We saw a few people on this marked path. Not far from the refuge we came across a large field of cowberries. This warranted a long rest break.

The path leads up to Passo Alto, but we turned right to the Usselettes lakes.
There were many beautiful lakes here, we spent some time trying to find the most picturesque and flat spot for a camp, protected from the wind.
We had enough time before dinner to familiarise ourselves with the surroundings.

We climbed a little hill to get a better view of the sunset. Our camp is in the shadow, on the opposite side of the stream.
