Day five: Marmolada glacier.

View of the village from our apartment window. Before flying home, we visited a small local museum (by the scaffolded church). The museum tells the story of local people, how they lived and what they did for living.
This ski lift up to the glacier was very unusual. You have to jump into this cage while it is moving.
Lake Fedaia. The road on the top of the dam crosses the lake. Small tunnels on the other side of the lake protect vehicles from avalanches during winter.
It took us a while to get to the glacier. It retreated quite a bit in recent times. The top of the ski lift used to be right next to the glacier. The far mountains in the picture is where we hiked yesterday.
This glacier is much steeper than Fradusta. We are surrounded by dark clouds as usual, but there was virtually no rain.
Sonya is short-roped to Victor, she can't fall very far.
As soon as the sun comes out, the imagery becomes so different!

The lake is far below. The glacier is quite steep here.
One can see small holes in the rocks. These are the ends of the tunnels dug during World War One.
We are descending.
We are walking down to the car park, as usual. First patches of flora among the boulders.
