Day one: Lagazuoi tunnels

The red line shows our track. Shift-click the track link to open it in nakarte.me. The "Р" and train icons show the car park and the top of the ski lift.

We got to the rather small Treviso airport (about an hour's drive from Venice) early in the morning. We rented a car and drove north towards the mountains. It only took us about two hours to get to Passo Falzarego.

We left the car at the car park, had a quick lunch, got our hiking gear out and went up on the ski lift which took us to Lagazuoi Piccolo (2700м). It was pretty cold, the ground was covered in snow in places, thick fog reduced visibility. The Summer transformed into Winter while we were travelling on the ski lift. There was not a soul around. The only person who went up with is in the ski lift, quickly disappeared in the vast expanse of the limestone plateau.

Victor and Sonya roped up, and we started our descent. These mountains were the World War One battlefield in 1915-1917. Austro-Hungarian troops fought the Italians. Both camps dug extensive system of tunnels in the mountain which survived to this day. In some places these tunnels come to the surface. After two years of relentless fighting, the Italians had to withdraw. This web page tells the story of war in Lagazuoi. We are decending into the tunnel.

A "misted" thistle.

The wind suddenly blew the fog away, and we found ourselves in a fairy land surrounded by the hills which looked like ships...

A bench for tired walkers.

We saw mountain ranges in the distance. They looked surreal, as if we were looking at a large painting.

The tunnel ended at a mountain side

Narrow paths traverse the mountain.

This is a reconstruction of a typical hut which was used to shelter the solders. It looked like a hut on chicken legs. In the evening we walked back down to the car park and drove to our apartment in Colle Santa Lucia.
