Day 1

We caught a night train to Gällivare. Yasha and Magda were already waiting for us. They came with two cars so we could all fit in. It took us a couple of hours to get to the start of our trip.

The blue line shows our track. Shift-click on the track link will open it in nakarte.me.

We changed, repacked our bags, took some pictures and said goodbye to the civilised world.

We followed a road between two lakes. We passed a few buildings and got to a wood.

We started gradually gaining altitude. There is a red reindeer collar up the birch tree, it's not clear how it got there.

The path was boggy in places, but there were also some outcrops of rock. There were loads of mushrooms but we didn't pick them.

Here we were attacked by mosquitoes, but we were well-prepared. This was the warmest day, we saw no more mosquitoes.

Our first lunch break.

We are above a chain of connected lakes in the northern part of the Sarek National Park.

Rhodiola rosea.

We made it out of the wood into the tundra.

Our first river crossing. Sonya entrusted Lova with carrying her backpack across.

It's only mid-August but the tundra has autumnal colours.

This pyramid-like mountain was visible from everywhere in the first part of our trip.

A reinforcement to our dinner.

The first day is over. We are camping by a small lake.
