Day 2. Karakayskiy Severnyi pass.
Our original plan was to descend from the Karakayskiy Severnyi pass and set a camp under the Kyrtyk Nizhniy pass. This would have given us enough time for a day trip along the ridge from the Kyrtyk Nizhniy pass to the Kyrtykaush pass. However we decided to set a camp higher up (to reduce the length of the next day's track), and shorten the day trip to the Kyrtykaush pass only.
The blue and red lines show our main track and the day trip. Shift-click on the track link will open it in nakarte.me.
We got up quite early, with the sunrise - around 5am. The breakfast is ready.
Mount Elbrus is hiding behind clouds.
Sonya and Leonya are ready to go.
It took us 2 hours to follow a well beaten path to the Karakayskiy Severnyi pass.
A group of wild horses.
The confluence of two streams.
Descending into the Islamchat valley.
The path traverses green slopes.
We had to descend to the bottom and then walk up the valley.
We set up our camp on a flat ridge, and a group of volunteers went on a hike to the Kyrtykaush pass.
A short break at the Kyrtykaush pass. The sun came out for the first time today!
The Ulluusenchi valley.
We are coming back to our camp. Mount Elbrus (on the left) is still hiding in the clouds.
Only a little stream separates us from the evening meal.
Our camp at the edge of a steep bank.
Sunset in the mountains.
