Dog Sledding

For Christmas everyone received the same present: a dog sledding trip.

We arrived at the site by 9am. It was just getting light. Outside it was -25 °C. Everyone was given warm jackets, trousers, boots and mittens. We were taught how to harness the dogs.

The route was about 15 kilometres long, and at a halfway point there was a yurt with a fire and hot juice waiting for us. The dogs also needed a rest.

Our guide lit the fire and told some jokes.

Part of the trail ran across the lake. We returned to the base, unharnessed the dogs and they received their well-earned lunch, and we headed home.

We walked along the path that Inger had trodden around Varuträsk to walk the dogs.

And Back to Skating Again

Masha, Vitya and Sonya went back to England, while Lova, Jule and Yasha spent a few more days driving along the coast in search of good ice.

Near the shore the ice is covered with snow, and further out in the open sea there is new snow-free ice.

You can even skate across snow like this.

The rock looks like a frozen fountain. At some point, the water must have come up onto the surface of the ice.

Very close to the shore the ice often cracks, and the water forms puddles which immediately freeze in such cold.
